BRICS Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meet 2022

First BRICS Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meet was organised on July 13, 2022, under the chairmanship of China.

Highlights

  • During the virtual meet, member countries signed a communiqué of “BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Corruption”.
  • Members set foot on broad consensus for rejecting the corruption safe haven initiative. It was agreed upon to show a clear message of safeguarding fairness and justice to international community.
  • This meeting marked the presence of heads of BRICS anti-corruption agencies, UNODC and other international organizations.

India at Anti-Corruption Meet

  • From India, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh addressed the Meet, in virtual mode.
  • In his address, the minister dwell on India’s commitment to tackle corruption. India has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against corruption.
  • India’s Central Vigilance Commission is the nodal agency to look after preventive and punitive measures against corruption.

How is India working against corruption?

India has taken several steps over time to reduce the corruption:

  1. Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 was implemented. It introduced following new provisions:
  • It criminalises the act of giving bribe and taking bribe.
  • It puts, an effective deterrence for these acts by individuals and corporate entities, in place.
  1. Lokpal: India also operationalised the Lokpal, which is a statutory body and is mandated to directly receive and process complaints against public servants in accordance with the Prevention of Corruption Act,1988.
  2. E-governance measures: India has been effectively implementing the e-Governance by extensive use of ICT tools including Digi Locker, fully automated Income Tax compliances, Direct Benefit Transfer through Aadhaar payment bridge etc. It has reduced the scope of corruption at all levels. Pensions,
