GoI: More firearms for Indian Shooters and others should surrender excess guns

On February 24, 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued notification under the Arms Act, 1959 and Arms Rules, 2016. The main aim of the notice is to facilitate the shooting practices of Indian Shooters.

Highlights

According to the new rules, the renowned shooters and international medalists shall hold 12 additional weapons. Earlier the number was seven. Also, if a shooter is renowned in one event, he shall hold 8 and if he is an expert in more than 2 events, he shall hold 10 and for more than 2 events, he shall hold 12.

Though the motive of the move is to boost shooting sportsmen, the younger shooters and aspiring shooters are not allowed to hold any of the weapons.

For other civilians, the number of weapons to be possessed has been reduced from three to two.

Issues of Arms (Amendment) Act

As the act was passed, the people of Punjab protested widely. This included businessmen, farmers and even retired army men. This is because, according to them, 50% of the villagers in Punjab stay in remote places. They have to protect themselves. Also, the villagers close to Pakistan border were insecure.
