Trade apprentices to get minimum monthly stipend: Govt

Union Ministry for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has notified changes in Apprenticeship Rules (1992) as Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2019 with an aim to increase skilled manpower in the country, and raise minimum stipend payable to trade apprentices.

As per the government the minimum stipend payable to trade apprentices will be on qualification based and would range from Rs.5000 per month to Rs.9000 per month from now onwards.

Also, the employers having four or more workers are eligible to engage apprentices. Government appealed to the states to take all possible steps to implement the law related to apprenticeship in companies.

MSDE Ministry has also launched ‘Apprenticeship Pakhwada’, a 15-day cross-country event aimed at driving widespread awareness of the Apprenticeship. It is in collaboration with 22 organizations to provide apprenticeship training to more than 2.5 lakh youth in India.

With skill development being the priority, the government also seeks to create a new structure of Kaushal Vikas Mitra from the state level to the village level.

Who is a Trade apprentice?

A person who undergoes apprenticeship training in any designated trade i.e. any occupation/trade/any subject field in technology/engineering/non – engineering/any vocational course as notified by Union Government.

Eligibility: Class 8, 10, 12 and ITI (a certificate course) pass- outs are eligible to undergo apprenticeship in designated trades for trade apprentices. In some trades, B.Sc. pass is also a prescribed qualification.
