Georgia’s Resolution on Hinduphobia

On March 27, the Georgia Assembly passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and intolerance. The resolution was sponsored by Republican representatives Lauren McDonald, Todd Jones, Rick Jasperse, David Clark, and Brent Cox and introduced by Representatives McDonald and Jones.

Understanding Hinduphobia

Hinduphobia is a term that is used to refer to antagonistic, derogatory and destructive attitudes and behaviors towards Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and Hindus that may manifest as hatred, prejudice or fear. With over 1.2 billion adherents worldwide and over 4 million living in the United States, the American Hindu community has made significant contributions in medicine, Yoga, Ayurveda, meditation, food, music, arts, and more.

Spearheading the Move for the Resolution

The resolution against Hinduphobia came as the result of the efforts of Atlanta chapter of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA). It is a grassroots advocacy group representing the Hindu community of North America. The aim of this advocacy group is to safeguard the Hindu community’s collective interests. It is involved in addressing issues faced by the community and educating the public about Hindu heritage and tradition.

The Stance of CoHNA on Anti-Caste Discrimination Legislations and Policies

CoHNA is opposed to anti-caste discrimination legislations and policies as they view them as Hinduphobic. This position is in contrast to Seattle’s recent legislative measure on anti-caste discrimination, which outlawed it. The Democrats in the US political scene are generally aligned with anti-caste discrimination laws.

Understanding the Georgia Resolution

The Georgia resolution condemning Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and intolerance does not have any legal consequences as it is a simple resolution. However, it serves as a symbolic gesture towards the Hindu community, recognizing their contributions and condemning any form of discrimination against them.
