Google Doodle: Indian physicist Anna Mani

On 23 August, Google dedicated a doodle to Anna Mani, India’s first female physics scientist. She was a physicist as well as a meteorologist. She has a special contribution related to research in the field of meteorology and energy.

Who is Anna Mani?

Anna Mani was born on 23 August 1918 in the former state of Travancore (present-day Kerala). She is popularly known as the Weather Woman of India. Even after being born in a normal upper middle class family, she wanted to achieve a prominent position in studies. At the age of 8, she had read all Malayalam books in the public library and all English books by the age of 12.

She did her Intermediate Science course from Women’s Christian College (WCC) and completed Bachelor of Science with Honors in Physics and Chemistry from Presidency College, Madras. After graduation, she taught at WCC for a year and won a scholarship for postgraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Anna completed her Ph.D. in London from where she learned to specialize in meteorological instruments.

And on his return to India in 1948, she started working for the India Meteorological Department. She also worked at the Raman Institute under the guidance of Indian scientist CV Raman and retired as the Deputy Director General of the Meteorological Department, Government of India in 1976. She passed away in 2001.
