SCTIMST to manufacture automated AMBU with Wipro 3D

The SCTIMST has tied up with Bengaluru based Wipro 3D to manufacture automated AMBU type ventilators in light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

AMBU

AMBU or Artificial Manual Breathing Unit is a hand-held device used to assist the respiration of the patients by providing positive pressure ventilation. It is also known as Bag Valve Mask (BVM) unit. It is a part of resuscitation kits.

About the Prototype

The prototype developed by SCTIMST with Wipro 3D is different from the conventional AMBU in that it is automated. Traditional BVM units require constant by-stander’s presence for its operation. Hence it wouldn’t be viable in the current situation given the contagious nature of the COVID-19 disease and the pressure on manpower. The automated prototype could help address this issue.

Features of the Prototype

Some of the features of the prototype are:

  • It is portable and light-weight.
  • Components required for its manufacture are readily available.
  • It enables positive pressure ventilation with a controlled rate of expiration, Inspiratory to Expiratory Ratio, Tidal Volume,
  • A PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure) valve can be added to prevent the collapse of the lungs’ alveoli.
