All-India Household Consumer Expenditure Survey

The All-India Household Consumer Expenditure Survey which is conducted every five years by the National Statistical Office (NSO) will be resumed this year after a prolonged break.

Overview:

Since 2011-12, the country hasn’t had any official estimates on per capita household spending. This estimate is used to check the poverty levels in different parts of the nation and to review other economic indicators such as the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The last survey in 2017-18 was junked by the government citing issues in data quality.

When will the survey be conducted?

The 2022-23 survey will be conducted from July and it will be completed by June 2023.

When will the results be available?

Based on the Survey, estimates of household Monthly Per Capita Consumer Expenditure (MPCE) and the distribution of households and people across different MPCE classes will be available after a year of the completion of the fieldwork.

What will the results include?

The results of the survey will have separate data sets for the urban and rural parts of the country. The survey will also provide splice spending patterns for each Union Territories and States and the different socio-economic groups.

Training programmes

From mid–May, the field enumerators who will be conducting this survey have been asked to attend training programmes with the aim of ensuring that interviews with the various households across rural and urban India are conducted sensitively and data is collected effectively. They will also be provided and trained on schedule lists of items on which information will be sought.
