Chess: Victory of Praggnanandhaa over Magnus Carlsen

India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has defeated the reigning world champion Norway’s Magnus Carlsen. He did so using black pieces and took 39 moves to checkmate Carlsen. This win came in the eighth round of Airthings Masters chess tournament’s preliminary stage being held online.

Overview:

  • This tournament is the first of the nine events that will take place under the USD 1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
  • This tour is scheduled to run from February to November 2022.
  • The tournament is timed at 15 minutes per game per player, with a 10-second increment after each move.
  • The 16-year-old Praggnanandhaa is only the third Indian to have defeated Magnus Carlsen after Viswanathan Anand and Pentala Harikrishna.

About Airthings Masters Chess Tournament

The Airthings Masters features 16 of the world’s best players, including Carlsen, Ding Liren of China, Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia,  Levon Aronian of the United States, Anish Giri of the Netherlands, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan. They are among the six of the world’s top nine chess players.

Praggnanandhaa is among is the third lowest-ranked player in this tournament, with an Elo rating of 2612, while Carlsen is the top seed, with an Elo rating of 2865.

About R. Praggnanandhaa

He is a chess grandmaster of India. At the age of 16, he is considered to be a chess prodigy and is the fifth youngest person to have received the title of grandmaster. His sister Vaishali Rameshbabu is also a chess player and has received the International Masters and the Woman Grandmaster title.

Magnus Carlsen is a five-time World Chess Champion and a Norwegian chess grandmaster. He has won the World Rapid Chess Championship three times and the World Blitz Chess Championship five times. Since, 1st July 2011, he has been ranked first in the FIDE world chess rankings. With a peak rating of 2882, he holds the record of having the highest peak recorded in the history of the game. He also holds the record for the longest unbeaten streak in classical chess at the highest level.
