World’s largest Khadi National Flag

On January 15, 2022, world’s largest national flag, made of Khadi fabric will be put to display, to celebrate the “Army Day”.

  • It will be displayed at Longewala, along the India – Pakistan Border in Jaisalmer.
  • Longewala was the centre stage of historic battle of 1971 between India and Pakistan.
  • It will be the fifth public display of the Khadi flag.

About the Monumental National Flag

The Monumental National Flag is 225 feet long and 150 feet wide. It is approximately 1400 kgs in weight. 70 khadi artisans prepared this flag in 49 days. Its making has created about 3500 man-hours of additional work for Khadi artisans and allied workers. 4500 meters of hand-woven, hand-spun, Khadi cotton bunting has been used to make the flag. It covers an area of 33, 750 square feet. The Ashok Chakra in the flag has a diameter of 30 feet.

5th display of the flag

  • This will be the 5th public display of the National Flag, after it was first unveiled in Leh on October 2,
  • It was displayed later at Hindon Airbase to mark the Air Force Day on October 8, 2021 and at Red Fort on October 21, 2021, marking the completion of 100 crore Covid-19 vaccinations across India.
  • Furthermore, it was displayed at the Naval Dockyard near Gateway of India in Mumbai, on December 4, 2021, to celebrate Navy Day.

Monumental National Flag symbolizes the collective spirit of Indian-ness as well as the heritage artisanal craft of Khadi.

Who have conceptualized the flat?

The flag has been conceptualized and prepared by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), for celebrating ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. Flag has been handed over to the Defence forces by KVIC, for displaying it at prominent places on historic occasions.

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)

KVIC is a statutory body, created in April 1957 in accordance with the ‘Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956′. It is an organisation under Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. The organisation seeks to plan, promote, organise, facilitate and assist in establishment and development of khadi & village industries across rural areas in association with other agencies involved in rural development.
