Why do we celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas?

India celebrates the Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, every year. The day is celebrated to mark India’s victory in Kargil War, that it fought with Pakistan.  Year 2022 marked the 23rd anniversary of India’s victory.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated;

  • To mark India’s victory over and sacrifices of soldiers during the Kargil war.
  • Kargil war was fought between Mat 1999 to July 1999 in Kargil-Drass sector of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The troops from Pakistan had illegally invaded some regions of along the Line of Control (LoC). Pakistan was positioned over the mountain tops of Northern Kargil District in Ladakh.
  • To regain its control over the region, Indian Army launched the “Operation Vijay”.
  • Finally, on July 26, 1999, Indian soldiers recaptured several mountains in the Himalayas of Kashmir region, that Pakistani intruders had captured.
  • To defuse the war situation, Lahore Declaration was signed by India and Pakistan in February 1999. The declaration was about finding a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated with great pride across India. On this day, Prime Minister of India pays tribute to martyrs, every year at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. In a tribute, Indian Army has built the “Kargil War Memorial”, at the foothills of Toloing Hills in Drass. At its gateway, a beautiful poem title ‘Pushp Ki Abhilasha’ has been engraved. In the year 2022, a bike rally was flagged off in Jammu and Kashmir to celebrate the day.
