WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM)

The WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, Gujarat will be the world’s first and only global outpost centre for traditional medicine. It will be emerging as an international hub for global wellness.

Overview:

• PM Modi laid the foundation stone on 19^th April 2022.
• The first Ayurvedic University that was established in the world was in Jamnagar.
• The event was attended by Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr. Mansukh Mandavia, Union Health Minister, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, and others.

Five goals of the GCTM

Five goals will be laid down by GCTM:

1. GCTM will be creating a database of traditional knowledge systems using various modern technology
2. It will also be creating an international standard for the certification and testing of traditional medicines so that people start using these medicines.
3. GCTM will also be evolving as a platform where global traditional medicines experts will be coming together and sharing relevant experiences.
4. GCTM will also be looking to mobilize funding for various kinds of research in the traditional medicines field.
5. GCTM will also be developing protocols for the holistic treatment of specific diseases so that the patients can benefit from both modern as well as traditional medicine.

The focus of the GCTM

The new Centre will be focusing on innovation, data, and sustainability and will be optimizing the use of traditional medicine. The five main focus areas of this centre are evidence and learning, research and leadership, sustainability and equity, data and analytics, and innovation and technology.
