Where is Gurudongmar Lake?

The recent visit by Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman to the Gurudongmar Lake, located at an altitude of 17,800 feet in the Mangan district of Sikkim, highlights the significance of this sacred site from both religious and strategic perspectives.

The Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in India and is situated in the Great Himalayas, close to the Indo-China border. It is considered to be sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus and is named after Guru Padmasambhava – the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, who visited the lake in the 8th century.

Interactions with Army Personnel

During her visit, the Union Minister interacted with army personnel who are stationed in the area. The lake’s strategic importance is evident from the presence of the Indian Army in the region. The lake’s proximity to the Indo-China border makes it a vital location for the Indian Armed Forces.

Offering Prayers to the Sacred Lake

Sitharaman also offered prayers to the Gurudongmar Lake, highlighting its significance as a site of religious and spiritual importance. The lake is believed to be a sacred site as Guru Padmasambhava blessed the lake during his visit to the area in the 8th century. It is considered to be a holy site by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus who visit the lake to offer their prayers and seek blessings.
