What is Swachhotsav?

Swachhotsav, a 3-week women-led cleanliness campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, has been launched by Union Minister Shri Hardeep Singh Puri to recognize and celebrate the shift from women in sanitation to women-led sanitation. The campaign aims to honour women from all backgrounds who contribute to making garbage-free cities a reality. This comes ahead of International Women’s Day.

What is WINS Challenge announced during Swachhotsav?

The WINS Challenge-2023 was also announced during the launch event, recognizing high-impact women entrepreneurs or women-led enterprises working towards urban swachhata. Steps are also being taken to create a network of 75,000 Garbage Free City Influencers across India in sanitation and waste management, encouraging women to join the mission of urban swachhata.

What is the need for Swacchotsav?

It is essential to motivate people, especially the women involved in the cleanliness field. Being the second most populous country in the world, India generates 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste. The urban solid municipal waste is to increase to 165 million tonnes by 2030. This means we will require more workforce in solid waste management. With the women taking lead here, India will tackle the issues around garbage effortlessly. More and more women should be encouraged to take up this job. It will help in women’s empowerment as well.

What are the benefits of Swachhotsav?

The Seachhotsav aims to increase women’s participation in garbage collection and waste management. Today 49% of the waste pickers are women. However, they make 33% less money than the men in the field. Swachhotsav aims to increase women’s participation in waste management. Also, by bringing more women into waste management, employment generation shall be increased in the country. Today the waste management sector is recycling and producing several innovative products. Many startups are showing interest to establish waste management companies due to the increased support from the GoI. Thus, increasing women’s participation in the sector will help in empowering them and also in managing the huge waste being accumulated in the country.
