What is EU-India Human Rights Dialogues?

The 10th EU-India Human Rights Dialogue was organised on July 15, 2022 in New Delhi. On the occasion, both India and the EU restated their commitment of protecting and promoting all human rights.

Highlights of the EU-India Human Rights Dialogues:

  • India and EU highlighted the indivisibility, universality, interrelatedness and interdependence of human rights.
  • Participants from India and EU discussed on several human rights and presented their approaches, efforts and achievements made in India and the EU, since the EU-India Human Rights Dialogues of 2021.
  • They exchanged their views and concerns related to civil and political rights, freedom of religion or belief, rights of minorities & vulnerable groups, freedom of expression & opinion, Children’s rights, women empowerment, Migrant’s rights, LGBTQI+ rights, use of technology in democracy & human rights, issues of security & human rights, co-operation in public health and humanitarian assistance & disaster relief.
  • India and EU agreed on significance of safeguarding freedom, independence and diversity of civil society actors like journalists.

Greater Cooperation on Human rights

Both the sides expressed the need for greater cooperation on the basis of international human rights laws and standards. Implementation of UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights were also updated during the dialogue. They discussed the recent initiatives launched in respective countries. For instance, India updated on status of “National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights”, on which both sides have agreed to deepen cooperation.

Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

They restated their commitment towards multilateralism, including Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, and significance of enhancing cooperation on human rights at international forum, specifically at UN General Assembly and UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
