What is Affordable Housing?

Affordable housing caters to housing needs of the specific section of people in the society who fall in the lower or middle-income groups. It is an important governance issue in developing nations where a huge chunk of the population lives below poverty line, are devoid of basic housing facilities and are not able to buy houses at the market price.

The income is the primary factor which decides affordability. The government of India has taken many steps in this direction to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. It has stressed on PPP or public-private partnership model for developing these units.
