Urban-20 (U20) Event to be Hosted by Ahmedabad Under India’s G20 Presidency

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is organizing the Urban 20 (U20) event during India’s G20 presidency from December 01, 2022 to November 30, 2023. The U20 provides a platform for cities from G20 countries to discuss important issues of urban development, including climate change, social inclusion, sustainable mobility, affordable housing, and financing of urban infrastructure, and propose collective solutions.

Unveiling of Urban 20 Event

  • On December 19, 2022, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel unveiled the logo, website, and social media handles of Urban 20.
  • Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep S. Puri, participated in the event virtually, along with officials from the Government of India, Gujarat, and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, as well as representatives from C40 and UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments).

Ahmedabad to Host U20 Cycle

  • During India’s G20 presidency, Ahmedabad, a UNESCO World Heritage city, will host the U20 cycle.
  • Along with C40 and UCLG, Ahmedabad will organize various events, including a City Sherpas’ inception meeting on February 9-10, 2023, thematic discussions and side events on urban development issues, culminating in the U20 Mayors’ Summit in July 2023.
  • Mayors and representatives from G20 countries, C40, UCLG member cities, and Observer Cities are expected to participate in these events.

Focus Areas of Urban 20 Event

  • The priority areas for the Urban 20 event include encouraging environmentally responsive behavior, ensuring water security, accelerating climate finance, leveraging local potential and identity, reinventing urban governance and planning frameworks, and catalyzing digital urban futures.
  • The aim of the U20 Ahmedabad is to move from “intention to action” and draft a roadmap for closing the gap between policy and practice to address critical urban issues.
  • The Communiqué, an outcome document reflecting the aspirations of participating cities, will be presented to the Honorable Prime Minister of India or his representative by the Mayor of Ahmedabad.

The Urban 20 event will showcase the city’s unique urban development and climate change initiatives, as well as its rich culture and heritage to participants. The event will emphasize that actions at the city level can drive lasting positive global outcomes, underscoring the interconnectedness of the world and our shared future.
