UN Ocean Conference 2022

The United Nations Ocean Conference 2022 was started from June 27, 2022 and will conclude on July 1, 2022.

  • Leaders from across the world have arrived in Capital of Portugal, Lisbon, as world is suffering from the impact of global warming and climate change.
  • During the conference, world leaders will find an international agreement for protecting world’s ocean.

Host of the conference

The Ocean Conference is being co-hosted by Governments of Kenya and Portugal.

Significance of the conference

This conference is being organised at a time when world is struggling to address the many deep-rooted problems that are laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic. These problems will require common shared solutions and major structural transformations mentioned in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Agenda of the meeting

  • The five-day UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon has brought officials and scientists from over 120 countries together, including the activists dismayed by failure to come up with international rules which might be proved beneficial to bring ocean sustainability.
  • During the conference, UN noted that, oceans face threat from global warming, acidification, pollution and other problems.
  • Ocean conference will adopt a declaration. This declaration would not be binding on its signatories, but could help in implementing and facilitating the conservation and protection of oceans and their resources.
  • The declaration is being negotiated within the framework of United Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is the main international agreement of governing human maritime activities.

India at Ocean conference

From India, Minister of Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh will attend the conference. He will speak on the theme– “Scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions”. India will provide science and innovation-based solutions for implementing Goal 14.
