Tunisia’s President unveils new Government

President of Tunisia, Kais Saied, unveiled a new government on October 11, 2021.

Highlights

  • The President also gave no hint when he would give up his near total control, seizing most powers in July 2021.
  • He also did not give any hint to start reforms which are required for a financial rescue package to avert economic disaster.
  • Under rules President Kais Saied announced in September 2021 when he swept aside many of the constitution moves and bring a new amendment that, cabinet will ultimately answer to him instead of Prime Minister Najla Bouden.
  • Many of the main cabinet members, such as foreign and finance ministers, were serving President Saied in an interim capacity, already. However, new interior minister is one among his stable allies.

Power of President Saied

Saied has thrust the democratic gains of 2011 revolution in Tunisia into doubt by seizing the executive authority and suspension of elected parliament. He also provided no clear programme to restore normal constitutional order.  He also awarded himself the power to appoint a committee for amending the 2014 constitution and put it to a referendum.

Concerns in Tunisia

The delay in appointing the government has aggravated Tunisia’s urgent need of financial support by stopping talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a rescue package. Central Bank governor has also warned of economic consequences. Furthermore, there are increasing fears of street confrontations between his opponents.
