SITMEX

SITMEX is a trilateral Naval exercise held between India, Singapore and Thailand. SITMEX means Singapore – India – Thailand Maritime Exercise. The SITMEX is held since 2019.

What are the significant events held during SITMEX 2021?

The SITMEX 21 was held in Andaman Sea. Khamrosin – class of anti – submarine patrol craft of Thailand participated in the exercise. Also, the Formidable – class frigate RSS Tenacious of Singapore Navy participated in the exercise. The Indian Navy was represented by INS Karmuk missile corvette. A several number of tactical draining drills were conducted during the exercise.

Why is it important to conduct SITMEX?

The SITMEX helps the countries in securing the Indian Ocean Region. Also, the exercise helps to secure the Sea Lanes of Communication. There are three major sea lanes in the Indian Ocean Region. More than 75% of world maritime trade passes through these lanes. First is the lane connecting Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Second is the lane connecting the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean. The third is the lane connecting Indian and Pacific Oceans through Strait of Malacca.

How will SITMEX help in Disaster Management?

During SITMEX, the Naval forces also train for relief measures during disaster management, especially Tsunami. The United Nations created Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in 2005. It was created after 2004 Tsunami. The international network seeks to prevent the recurrence of similar devastation. The training during the exercise will help the countries to work in such international networks during disaster times. This improves the efficiency of the international operations during disasters.
