Sero Survey: 90% of people in Mumbai have COVID-19 antibodies
A new sero survey was conducted in between August 12 to September 9, 2021 in the anticipation of a third wave of covid-19 infection. This is the firth sero survey by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Highlights
This study was conducted on the 8,674 samples. These samples were collected thorough systematic random sampling from all the 24 city wards, and people visiting municipal dispensaries & doctors’ offices in slum as well as non-slum areas.
Key Findings
- As per report, 86.64 per cent of people were found to have Covid-19 antibodies in the Greater Mumbai area.
- This mean that, they have been exposed to the coronavirus at least once.
- Following the sero survey, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has warned people that estimated sero-prevalence levels do not indicate high protection levels.
- Scientists still continue to emphasise on the use of face masks and hand sanitisers at public places.
- There is no significant difference between slum and non-slum populations with the prevalence of 87.02 per cent to 86.22 per cent respectively.
- Report finds a slight difference between men and women. Sero-prevalence among men was at 85.07 per cent while among women was at 88.29 per cent
How samples were collected?
- 65 per cent of samples were collected from people who had received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine.
- Among unvaccinated participants, sero-prevalence was detected in just 79.86 per cent people.
- 20 per cent of the samples were collected from healthcare workers. Among them, Sero-prevalence was 87.14 per cent.
