September 29: World Heart Day

The World Heart Day was created by the World Heart Federation to inform the people around the globe that Cardio Vascular diseases are the world’s leading cause of death. Its main objective is to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, 80% of premature deaths can be avoided.

Background

According to World Health Organization, around 18 million people die of cardio vascular diseases every year. The major causes of the disease according to the organization are tobacco consumption, alcohol, unhealthy lifestyle, sedentary life style, unhealthy food and irregular sleep.

According to the medical journal The Lancet, the prevalence of the disease has increased by 50% in 2016 as compared to 1990.

As the mortality rate due to heart diseases were high, the world leaders committed to reduce it by 25% by 2025. The World Heart Day is one of the steps towards achieving the goal.

The World Heart Federation is a non – governmental organization. The headquarters of the organization is located in Geneva, Switzerland. It founded the World heart day along with the global leaders in 2000.
