Pathogens named as critical by WHO found in Yamuna: Study

A team of researchers from the IIT Delhi has found some pathogens that are actually critical in nature, in the Yamuna River. The team reached this conclusion after studying 20 major sewer drains and Yamuna River at five locations across New Delhi.

What has been found?

The team has found faecal coliform in abundance in all the samples collected from various areas. Also, a rapid and excessive increase in various antibiotic-resistant genes among different bacteria through horizontal gene transfer was also found. The team could find pollutants and their possible sources from 20 different locations.

Possible Reasons for Existence of such Pathogens

The reason for the existence of these pathogens can be attributed to poor sewage collection and lack of connectivity between drains and sewage treatment plants in the city. It is required that an appropriate infrastructure for sewage management is developed in the country.

Significance of the Findings

The resistant bacteria found are very much harmful to rivers and they can also harm animals as well as human beings. The existing treatment plants are working well with the pollutants like carbon, phosphorous, etc. But after some time, they will also need an upgrade.

What are Pathogens?

It is something that can cause disease. A pathogen can be referred to as an infectious agent or simple a germ. It is primarily used to define infectious microorganism or agent such as virus, bacteria, protozoa, etc.
