NUSI gets Best Welfare Organisation 2015 award

India’s oldest and largest shipping trade union, National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) has been honoured with the ‘Best Welfare Organisation of the Year – 2015’ award.
The award was presented to Abdulgani Y Serang , NUSI general secretary by Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of International Maritime Organisation at a function held in London.
The award is promoted by the United Kingdom based International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN).
The award recognise excellence of organisation in the provision of welfare services and facilities for seafarers. This award is part of ISWAN’s on-going work to promote implementation of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006.
NUSI was founded in 1932 by Khansaheb Mohamed Ebrahim Serang.  It was established for the right of employment, increase in wages and improvement of working conditions of seafarers. Presently, NUSI has around 80,000 seafarers as members working aboard Indian as well as foreign cargo ships.
