North Polar Spur

The North Polar Spur is a large ridge of hot radio and X-ray emitting gas. This ridge of gas rises above the plane of the galaxy.

About North Polar Spur

It starts near Sagittarius and extends till Scorpius pasting Lupus and Centaurus. The gases are part of interstellar bubble that were created by winds of supernova explosions and hot and young stars. It lines up with the Fermi Bubbles that extends above and below the Milky Way disk. The astronomers are still unable to find out how far the North Polar spur extends on the sky. However, the first map of North Polar Spur was created by ROSAT. ROSAT is a German X-ray satellite telescope. It was launched on Delta II rocket in 1990. Some astronomers believe that the North Polar spur is a part of Local bubble. The Local bubble is an interstellar medium. It is located in the orion arm of the Milky way galaxy.

North Polar Spur: A part of tunnel like magnetic structure

In 2021, astronomers discovered that the solar system is surrounded by tunnel like magnetic structure. This magnetic structure connects the North Polar spur and Fan region. The fan region and north polar spur are located on opposite sides of the sky. This tunnel is 1,000 light years long. Fan region is still a mystery to the astronomers. The astronomers look towards the fan region as it is bright in the polarised radio sky.
