National Polio Immunization Drive, 2022

Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandavia, launched the National Polio Immunization Drive for 2022, on February 26.

Highlights

On the Occasion, the Minister noted that, India’s strategic fight against polio is a success story of its public health policy against vaccine preventable diseases. India is vigilant and is ensuring that every child under 5 years of age get polio drops.

Universal Immunization Programme (UIP)

The Universal Immunization Programme is focusing on protecting children from more diseases than ever before. In the recent past, several new vaccines have been introduced, such as Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), Measles-Rubella vaccine (MR), and Rotavirus vaccine. Government has also introduced “injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccine” into the immunization program for additional protection of the children.

Mission Indradhanush

Mission Indradhanush was launched with the aim of fully immunizing more than 89 lakh children who are either partially unvaccinated or unvaccinated under UIP. The mission targets children aged under 2 years and pregnant women for immunization. It provides vaccination against 12 Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPD) namely, diphtheria, tetanus, Whooping cough, tuberculosis, polio, hepatitis B, meningitis & pneumonia, Japanese encephalitis (JE), rotavirus vaccine, Hemophilus influenza type B infections, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and measles-rubella (MR). Vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis and Haemophilus influenzae type B are administered in selected districts.

Intensified Mission Indradhanush

The Intensified Mission Indradhanush was launched in 2017 to reach each and every child aged under two years and those pregnant women who have been left uncovered under routine immunisation programme. It mainly focuses on urban areas.

Polio National Immunization Day 2022 (NID)

The Polio National Immunization Day 2022 was organised on February 27, 2022.

Pulse Polio Immunization Programme

Pulse Polio Immunization Programme was launched in India in financial year 1994-95, following the World Health Assembly resolution in 1988. It was launched with the objective of achieving 100 percent coverage under Oral Polio Vaccine.
