National Girl Child Day: January 24

Every year India celebrates National Girl Child Day on January 24. The main objective of the celebrations is to create awareness about education for girls and provide them with good health and nutrition. Also, the day aims to eliminate gender biases in the country. The Ministry of Women and Child Development leads the celebration activities. India is celebrating the day since 2008. The government of India launched several initiatives to raise the status of girl children in the country such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Beti Bachao Beti Padao. The National Girl Child Day celebration focuses on raising awareness about such schemes as well.

The theme of National Girl Child Day

The Government of India has not announced any themes for this year’s celebrations. However, earlier the Government had planned to celebrate the day on “Digital Generation, Our Generation, Our Time is Now, Our rights and Our Future”

Child Marriage in India

This is one of the major concerns and hindrances in uplifting girl status in the country. Indian law says that the marriage age for girls is 21. However, many girls in rural India are forced into marriages before 21. This affects their education and future. Jharkhand has the highest girl-child marriages in the country.
