The Union Budget for 2022-23 looks to implement the National Education Policy (NEP). To help this the decision to establish a National Digital University was announced that will look to solve India’s seat scarcity problem in educational institutions.

Overview:

The digital university will provide access to high-quality higher education in several languages while also complying with the National Education Policy 2020.

Prospects of Digital University in India

The Indian government plans to establish a digital university to provide world-class quality education and promote online learning in several Indian languages.

The government will also expand the ‘One Class One TV Channel’ programme under the PM e-Vidya scheme to address the learning loss which has been caused due to the closure of schools because of the pandemic.

The digital university which has been proposed along with the increased education through television programmes will help in guiding the nation through a pioneering, modern, and practical blueprint.

There is a growing awareness that the present university model education system is restrictive and has failed to meet the requirements of the student’s financial conditions, interests, and various cognitive skills. Hence, there is a need to develop an education system that is flexible in nature and can impart quality education anytime and anywhere.

Disadvantages of Digital University

The main disadvantage of such a system is that many might not have the required capital or technologies to avail of this kind of education. The digital divide still prevalent in the nation will cause a hindrance to this kind of educational system.

Conclusion

The government must help in bringing down the digital divide of the nation. The bigger educational institutions should also play their part in forming such a flexible and affordable educational system in the country. SWAYAM, ePG-Pathshala, SWAYAM-Prabha, National Digital Library, eGyanKosh, and Virtual Labs are examples of the existing resources that can be integrated into the digital university.
