National Common Mobility Card – Update (December, 2020)

On December 28, 2020, PM Modi launched the National common Mobility Card. The National Common Mobility Card will allow passengers with RuPay debit card to be swiped for Metro level.

Key Features of National Common Mobility Card

  • The National Common Mobility Card can be used at all transit locations. The card makes all new metro and transit payments interoperable with a single card.
  • The National Common Mobility Card will allow passengers with RuPay debit card obtained from twenty-three banks. This includes UCO, SBI, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank.
  • The National Common Mobility Card facility is to be available in all Metro by 2022.
  • It is an automatic fare collection system. The system will turn the smartphones in to an interoperable transport card that commuters can use to pay for bus, metro and railway services.
  • The National Common Mobility Card system is to be adopted in the Phase IV of the Delhi Metro project.
  • In order to make the National Common Mobility Card compatible, the metro stations and transit systems should be installed with Automatic Fare Collection system.
  • In order the make sure the debit cards of the banks are NCMC compliant, they have to make required changes.
  • The National Common Mobility Card was launched under the One Nation One Card initiative.
  • The idea of the National Common Mobility Card was proposed by Nandan Nilekani Committee set up by Reserve Bank of India.

The Committee had also proposed to reduce number of cash transactions in the country and to make all payments done by GoI to the citizens through digital. The committee suggested that the National Common Mobility Card should contain two instruments, a regular debit card that can be used at ATMs and a local wallet that can be used for contactless payments.
