NATGRID-NCRB sign MoU to link 14,000 police stations

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Under the MoU, a centralised data pool is to be created that will provide data to more than 14,000 police stations in the country.

Highlights

The MoU will provide access to Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) database. As in, the entity linked to the centralized data pool can get details of FIRs (First Information Report) and stolen vehicles. The project is to begin operating from December 31, 2020.

Significance

Currently, the security agencies are contacting in a telephone or an airline. The data is then being shared through international servers such as Google. The MoU will make sure information is shared through a secured medium owned by GoI. This will help to safeguard the leaks.

NATGRID

The NATGRID project has been renewed under Home Minister Amit Shah. It has been allocated a budget of Rs 2,800 crores. The NATGRID is to act as a medium for at least 10 central agencies such as RAW (Research and Analysis Wing), Intelligence Bureau to access data in a secured platform.
