Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)

Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a four-day global event that takes place from February 18 to 21. It is an online citizen science or community science project that was first launched in 1998 by Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society.

About Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)

During this four day event, data is collected by participants on wild birds and the data is shared online on live website of the GBBC. The event invites people from around the world to spend time in their favourite places and engage in birdwatching, sharing data and photos online. The importance of the event is that it helps the scientists better understand the global bird population before one of their annual migrations. The data is entered into eBird, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science (community science) project.

Great Backyard Bird Count in India

People in various places in India also participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. E-bird India and Birdcount-India are organising the event at various places including Kukkarahalli Lake, Karanji Lake, Hebbala Lake, Lingambudhi Lake, Muganahundi Lake, and Thippaiayana Kere etc. This activity sheds light on the bird population and its habitat.

Birdwatching in Mysuru

The exercise has provided information into the status of the ecosystem of the state in addition to taking stock of the birds and their species. The GBBC is hosted in many regions of the state in addition to Mysuru, but bird-watching and maintaining a database has been popular in Mysuru for decades. This has also resulted in the creation of a scientific database, which will be further expanded by the ongoing GBBC.
