MoU for Offshore Data signed between Indian Navy and GSI
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Navy and Geological Survey of India (GSI) on Tuesday, 21st January 2020. The agreement was on ‘Sharing of seabed sediments data, products and expertise for Naval Application in Meteorology and Oceanography’. The MoU was signed in on behalf of the Indian Navy by the head of the Indian Navy’s Oceanology and Meteorology Directorate, Commodore AA Abhyankar, and from the Geological Survey of India, Deputy Director-General, N Maran.
The Marine and Coastal survey Division of the Geological Survey of India a vast repository of offshore data which was collected at the time of mapping most of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. For the Indian Navy’s rapidly growing blue water fleet, the offshore repository of data collected using the oceanic research vessels of GSI (vessels- Samudra Kaustubh, Samudra Manthan, Samudra Ratnakar, and Samudra Shaudhikarna), will now be used by the Indian Navy. The data would be used for oceanographic modeling during their maritime operations in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).
