Manufacture and import of Polyester National flags – Update (March, 2022)

The Union government amended the 2002 Flag Code of India, to allow the manufacture and import of machine-made polyester national flags.

About the amendment

  • According to the amended flag code, “The National Flag shall be made of hand-spun and hand-woven or machine-made, cotton, polyester, wool, silk khadi bunting.”
  • Earlier the rules did not permit polyester flags. Also, only hand-spun and hand-woven flags were allowed, as the import of machine-made flags was banned in 2019.

About Flag code of India, 2002

It is a set of laws, practices, and conventions that apply to the display of the national flag of India. It has been divided into three parts:

  1. Part I of the code contains a general description of the national flag.
  2. Part II of the code is devoted to the display of the national flag by members of the public, private organizations, educational institutions, etc.
  3. Part III of the code relates to the display of the national flag by union and state governments and their organizations and agencies.

The National flag of India, officially described in the Flag Code of India, is as follows: “The color of the top panel shall be India saffron and that of the bottom panel shall be India green. The middle panel shall be white, bearing at its center the design of Ashoka Chakra in navy blue color with 24 equally spaced spokes.”
