The first phase of the Mahakal Lok Corridor was inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Modi.

The first phase of the Mahakaleshwar Temple Corridor Development Project was implemented in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
Under Rs.850 crore project, the precinct of the Mahakaleshwar temple will be expanded nearly seven times to improve the experience of the pilgrims and provide world-class modern amenities.
Under the project, the entire area will be decongested and the heritage structures will be conserved and restored.
The Mahakal Path has 108 stambhs (pillars) that features Anand Tandav Swaroop (Dance form) of Lord Shiva.
Various sculptures featuring the life of Lord Shiva will be depicted along the Mahakal Path.
The mural wall along this path depicts the Shiva Purana stories like Ganesha’s birth, Story of Sati and Daksha and such fables.
The entire temple plaza, spanning across 2.5 hectares, will be monitored round-the-clock by Integrated Command and Control Centre using artificial intelligence software and surveillance cameras.

About Mahakal temple

Mahakal temple is one of the 12 jyotirlinga sites in India. Jyotirlinga sites are considered to be the manifestation of Shiva. Mahakal temple is the only jyotirlinga that faces south. Other sites face east. South is held by religious belief as the direction of death. Mahakaleshwar is worshipped by people to prevent untimely death. This temple is mentioned in several ancient poetic texts that originated in India. It was described in the early part of Meghadutam (Purva Megha), which was composed by Kalidasa in the 4^th century. The literature described it as a stone foundation having ceiling rested on wooden pillars. The temple did not have any shikharas or spires before the Gupta period. The temple complex was destroyed in the 13^th century Turk ruler Shams-ud-din Iltutmish while raiding Ujjain. The present structure was built by Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in the year 1734.
