LTTE Chief Prabhakaran is alive

Velupillai Prabhakaran was the founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The militant organization was responsible for killing Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. LTTE wants a separate land for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. They waged a war against Sri Lanka 25 years ago. The Sri Lankan Army killed the LTTE chief in 2009 and the war ended. However, a Tamil Political leader Nedumaran recently claimed that Prabhakaran is still alive and healthy.

What is the issue?

The Tamilians arrived in Sri Lanka during the Chola period. During British rule, the Tamilians were favoured and the Sinhalese were isolated. After the British left the island in 1948, the scenario started reversing. 11.2% of the population are Tamilians and 74.9% are Sinhalese. As days passed by, Sinhalese started occupying key government posts. This isolated Tamil. Thus they formed a militant organization called LTTE claiming a separate land.

How were they associated with Rajiv Gandhi’s murder?

The suicide bomber that killed Rajiv Gandhi was from LTTE. The LTTE did not like India sending peacekeeping forces. The force was sent to help the Sri Lankan Government in controlling LTTE.
