Lancet: Life Expectancy in India increases to 70.8 years

The recently published Lancet medical report says that the life expectancy of India has increased since 1990.

Key findings of the report

The life expectancy of India has increased from 59.6 years in 1992 to 70.8 years in 2019. Kerala has the highest life expectancy. In Kerala life expectancy has increased to 77.3 years. The life expectancy of Uttar Pradesh was 66.9 years.

Highlights of the report

  • The report says that the maternal mortality in India is coming down. However, maternal malnutrition and child malnutrition are still the major factors of illness and death in India. They still contribute to one-fifth of total disease burden in States touches Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • The cardiovascular diseases that were the fifth major cause of death in India has now become number 1
  • The cancer rates are increasing in the country
  • In the last 30 years chronic illness including high blood sugar, obesity and air pollution related health issues have increased in India
  • The largest contributors to health loss in India in the last 30 years were diabetes, heart diseases, stroke and musculoskeletal disorders.
  • The top five risk factors of death in India are air pollution, high blood pressure, tobacco use, poor diet and high blood sugar. The air pollution contributed to 1.7 million death, high blood pressure contributes to 1.47 million death, tobacco use to 1.23 million death, poor diet to 1.18 million deaths and high blood sugar to 1.12 million deaths.

Maternal mortality rate

According to World Health Organization, Maternal mortality is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of pregnancy termination. According to the national health policy 2017 India has set a target of achieving MMR of100 per 100000 live births by 2020. As of 2018, maternal mortality ratio in India is 113.

India has also committed to achieve the United Nations target of sustainable development goals for maternal mortality rate of 70 per 100000 live births by 2030.
