Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project

Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project is aimed at making Telangana drought-proof by harnessing the flood waters of the River Godavari. The project also houses the world s biggest pump house with seven pumps of 139 MW each.

The project seeks to divert 180 TMC of Godavari flood water to facilitate agriculture, rejuvenate tanks, provide water for industries, and supplying drinking water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad by creating a series of storage tanks and a network of pipelines.

River Godavari

River Godavari also known as Ganges of South originates in Triambakeshwar, Maharashtra. Through its extensive network of tributaries, River Godavari drains the states of Maharashtra (48.6%), Telangana (18.8%), Andhra Pradesh (4.5%), Chhattisgarh(10.9%), Odisha (5.7%) and drains into the Bay of Bengal.

The left bank tributaries of River Godavari are Banganga, Kadva, Shivana, Purna, Kadam, Pranahita, Indravati, Taliperu and Sabari. The right bank tributaries are Nasardi, Darna, Pravara, Sindphana, Manjira, Manair and Kinnerasani.
