On July 9, 2022, Union government launched “Jute Mark India logo”, which will act as “certification of authenticity” for jute products.

Key Points

The certification from “jute mark India” will help in strengthening domestic market and exports of jute products from India.
Jute Mark label will be attached with the jute products. It will contain a unique QR code. Customers can get to know about producers by scanning the QR code.

Jute Mark India (JMI) scheme

Jute Mark India scheme was set in motion to provide collective identity and assurance regarding origin and quality for jute and jute products.
It would work as a hallmark of powerful creative work, for defining the jute product with quality. It will distinguish the quality products from competition and connects it to customers.
The certification is expected to boost domestic market and exports of jute products from India.
This scheme has been launched as a part of an umbrella scheme for development & promotion of jute and jute products in Indian market as well as in global market.
An outlay of Rs 485.58 crore has been allocated for the scheme, to promote jute sectors during financial year 2022-2026.

Which is the nodal agency?

National Jute Board is the nodal agency, for the promotion of jute and jute products in Indian and global markets.

Jute exports from India

During the financial year 2020-21, jute products of worth Rs 2740 crore were exported. On the other hand, jute diversified products were valued at Rs 1216. It accounted for 46 per cent of the total value of exports of jute products. During financial year 2021-22, provisional exports of jute products was Rs 3785.68 crore. This accounted for an increase by 38.13 per cent against provisional exports in 2020-21.

National Jute Board

National Jute Board is the nodal agency for promotion of Indian Jute. It was set up under “National Jute Board Act, 2008”. It is chaired by the Secretary of Union Ministry of Textiles. Its primary objective is to provide better marketing for jute and jute products. It is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal.
