INS Sudarshini

INS Sudarshini is an Indian Navy Ship. It was built by Goa Shipyard Limited. It is the sister ship of INS Tarangini. In December 2021, the INS Sudarshini participated in Operational Turn Around Exercise. The exercise was held in Muscat, Oman.

About INS Sudarshini

  • The ship was designed by Colin Mudie. He was a Naval Architect of United Kingdom. It was commissioned in 2012.
  • The ship is 54 metres long. It has 7.5 metres of rope, 20 sails and 1.5 km of steel wire. These ropes are important to anchor the ship.
  • It can remain at sea at least for 20 days.
  • It is capable of under sail operations.
  • It is used for character building operations.

INS Sudarshini – Diesel Powered Engine

The Ship uses a diesel powered engine. The Government of India is slowly reducing the consumption of petroleum products, mainly petrol and diesel. In 2020, the shipping industry of India alone consumed 4.41 billion litres of diesel. India is moving towards electric propelled engines.

INS Sudarshini uses a barque rig

It uses a barque rig. The barque rig ships were designed in 18th century. These ships could operate only with smaller crew. The oldest active sailing vessel in the world is “STAR of INDIA”. It was built in 1863 and then was converted to a barque. Star of India was built at Ramsey, Isle of Man. She is now in California. She was converted into a sailing museum. Isle of Man is a self governing island located in Irish sea. The UK is responsible for the defence of Isle of Man. It is located between UK and Northern Ireland.
