Indo-Finnish Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing

An Indo-Finnish Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing will be established by India and Finland with the aim of stimulating development projects and innovative research to address the needs of both nations.

Overview:

  • The decision to establish this centre was announced after Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs, Mika Lintila met Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
  • This bilateral collaboration between both nations to set up this virtual network centre is an attempt to stimulate development projects and innovative research that will address specific challenges and needs, demonstrate the commercial potential as well as high industrial relevance, and will also be aiming to deliver benefit to both countries.
  • This move comes in the wake of the decision that was taken in the joint committee meeting held in the year 2020 with the aim of initiating cooperation in new emerging areas like quantum computing, 5G, and sustainability by involving various industries, academia, and start-ups of both countries.

Indian institutes

Three Indian institutes have been identified for the Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing. They are IISER-Pune, IIT-Madras, and C-DAC-Pune.

Other programmes initiated by the Department of Science and Technology

Several new mission mode programmes have been initiated by the Department of Science and Technology like cyber-physical systems, green hydrogen fuel, electric vehicles, future manufacturing, and quantum technologies, and have sought collaboration with Finland to solve issues related to societal challenges.
