Indian Air Force Test Fired Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile

On October 30, 2020, the Indian Air Force test fired the Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile from a Sukhoi fighter aircraft. The test was conducted in Bay of Bengal.

Highlights

The Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile was tested in Bay of Bengal. The missile hit a sinking ship with high accuracy. The missile was launched from an aircraft that belonged to the Thanjavur based Tigersharks Squadron. Thanjavur is located in Tamil Nadu. The aircraft was refuelled in mid-air before the missile was released.

The missile was launched from Su-30 MKI aircraft. It comes in the middle of India-China stand off in Ladakh. India has been frequently test firing its missiles lately.

Rudram-1

The Rudram-1 is an anti-radiation missile and is to be inducted into service in 2022. India recently conducted the test firing of Rudram-1. The anti-radiation missile detects and hits enemy radiation source. There are very few anti-radiation missiles in the world. They are Rudram of DRDO, Hormoz of Iran, TC-2A of Taiwan, Kh-58 of Russia, ALARM of UK, AGM-88 HARM of USA. MAR-1 is under development in Brazil.

So far only surface to surface and surface to air anti-radiation missiles have been developed. The air-to-air anti-radiation missile is under development in Russia.

Other recent missile tests

The Indian Defence Force has been frequently conducting missile tests from land, air and water lately. On October 23, 2020, the Indian Navy released a video showing the INS Prabal launching a missile. Similar tests were conducted by Indian Navy on October 30, 2020 as well. On October 30, 2020, the Indian Navy test fired an anti-ship missile from INS Kora in Bay of Bengal.
