India and France concur to expand defence ties

Screenshot_2India and France discussed about the ongoing military cooperation and future cooperation in the areas of defence equipment and technology. This will be a mutual benefit for both the countries. The cooperation fields will include high technology joint research and development and transfer of technology.
Key outcomes of the discussion between India and France:

  • Negotiations have been made for Rs. 50,000 crore for procuring 126 Rafale combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
  • Rs. 30,000 crore project for co-developing the Maitri surface-to-air missile defence system.
  • A deal was done for building six Scorpene submarines for the Navy.

Both nations agreed to enhance exchanges between their defence institutions and armed forces including in the areas of military education and training and through the conduct of military exercises.
Navies of both countries are working towards finalizing the schedule for the conduct of Exercise ‘Varuna’ off the coast of India and the next Air Force exercise ‘Garuda’ to be held during the first half of 2014.
