India-European Union to hold virtual summit

The fifteenth India-European Union Summit is to be held on July 15, 2020 at Line of Actual Control. The summit is to be co-chaired by PM Modi and European Council President Charles Michel.

Highlights

The Summit will review the cooperation between India and European Union in the areas of trade and investment, security relations, economic cooperation, etc. The summit will also discuss developments on COVID-19 pandemic.

The previous India-EU summit was held in New Delhi in October 2017. It was scheduled to be held in Brussels in March, 2020. However, the summit was postponed due to COVID-19.

India-European Union

The relations between India and European Union are defined by the agreement signed between them in 1994. Both the sides have been trying to negotiate Free Trade Agreement since 2007.

Significance

European Union is the largest trade partner of India. The trade between them stood at 104.3 billion USD in 2018-19.
