ICMR inks agreement with NIAD and Gates Foundation for healthcare research collaboration

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has inked declaration of intent with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD) of National Institutes of Health, USA and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The declaration of intent between ICMR and NIAD was exchanged in the presence of US Ambassador Kenneth I Juster and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-chair Bill Gates.

About ICMR, NIAD, Gates Foundation Collaboration

Its purpose is to take forward an ongoing collaborative healthcare research and training programme between the two countries. It will establish a research fellowship programme for young scientists from Untied States and India to expand healthcare research that will advance discovery to improve clinical practice and benefit public health in both countries. Its initial focus is intended to engage scientists in infectious disease and immunology research, with emphasis on diseases that affect women and children.

108th Foundation Day of ICMR

In event celebrating this foundation day, Bill Gates presented ICMR Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare to three game-changers of country in field of health.

They are: Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla (Chairman and Managing Director, Serum Institute of India), Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (Chairman and Managing Director, Biocon India) and Dr Prakash Baba Amte (Director, Lok Biradari Prakalp).

They have been awarded in recognisation of their efforts in providing better health care to people in the country and globally through innovative diagnostics, cost-effective life-saving tools and increasing access to healthcare at the grassroots.

It is India’s apex scientific body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research. It was established in 1911 as Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) and renamed to its present name in 1948. This makes it one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world. It functions under Department of Health Research, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is headquatered in New Delhi.
