Global Food Security Index 2021

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) is developed annually by London based Economist Impact. It is sponsored by Corteva Agriscience. The Global Food Security Index 2021 is the tenth edition of GFSI. The index is calculated based on availability of food, affordability of food, quality and safety of the available food and natural resources and resilience. The index is calculated considering 58 food security indicators. These include economic inequality, actions needed to accelerate UN SDG and many more.

About GFSI 2021

  • India was ranked at 71st position in the GFSI, 2021 of 113 countries.
  • Ireland topped the index. The average score of the country was 84.
  • Ireland was followed by Austria with a score of 81.3 and United Kingdom with a score of 81 at second and third places respectively.
  • Of the bottom five nations in the ranking, four are in Sub Saharan Africa and Yemen in the Middle East.
  • The overall food security in the world has decreased for the second time in a row of seven years of journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal.

India in GFSI 2021

India ranked 80th in affordability, 74th in quality and safety, 29th in availability and 40th in Natural resources and resilience. Sri Lanka and Pakistan scored better than India in food affordability.

The score of India has increased by 7 points from 54.5 in 2012 to 57.2 in 2021.

Asia Pacific

In the region of Asia Pacific Japan held the top position with the score of 79.3. Japan was followed by Singapore and New Zealand. India was ranked at 14th position in this region.

Suggestions

The report suggested required action to be taken at global, national and local level to end hunger and malnourishment. Also it suggested that in order to meet the future challenges, sustained investments should be made in food security starting from climate resilient crop yields.
