Electoral autocracy

Electoral autocracy is a type of hybrid political regime in which democratic institutions are present but there are numerous violations of liberal democratic norms. Recently, India was classifies as an ‘electoral autocracy’ alongside Hungary and Turkey in the Liberal Democracy Index. This index is published by V-Dem Institute of Sweden. This downgrading of India from ‘electoral democracy’ has been described as ‘one of the most dramatic shifts’ in over a decade.
