Delhi Govt. Slapped with CCRGA Notice on Advertisement

The Supreme Court-mandated Content Regulation in Government Advertising (CCRGA) has issued a notice to the Delhi Government after their advertisement had appeared on the newspapers on July 16. The committee has taken suo-moto cognizance of the issue and has taken this step. According to the committee, the advertisement was only meant for the political message and nothing else.

The Delhi Government has been given time of 60 days to reply on the issue on the following points:

  • The cost of the exchequer in the advertisement published
  • The purpose of such an advertisement
  • How does the advertisement not violate the SC Guidelines on the issue
  • Media Plan of the advertisement along with names of publications and their editions

Background

As per the SC Order dated 13.05.2015, it has been mentioned that the government can only give advertisements relevant to the constitutional and legal obligations of the government as well as the rights and entitlements of the citizens of the country. As per this order, a three-member committee was formed by the government to look into the content of the government advertisements in various media platforms. The committee can also suo-moto cognizance of issues and then recommend corrective measures.

The CCRGA is now chaired by the former Chief Election Commission OP Rawat. Apart from that, the other members are from Prashar Bharati, advertising domain, etc.
