“SLINEX 2011”: Indo-Sri Lanka Naval Exercise

  • SLINEX 2011: Code named SLINEX 2011, it was the 5 day Joint Naval Exercise b/w India and Sri Lanka, in the seas off Trincomalee
  • Started on September 19, 2011 it concluded on September 23, 2011
  • Objective: Improving interoperability of the two navies
  • INS Shivalik, considered one of the largest stealth frigate in the world also participated in the exercise

USA : “Hakkani” terror network carried out recent attack on US Embassy in Kabul with ISI support

  • United States held that the “Hakkani” terror network carried out recent attack on US Embassy in Kabul with the assistance of Pakistan’s ISI
  • Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen held that “Hakkani” group is an arm of Pakistan’s intelligence service, ISI
  • Mullen also opined that in prefering to use violent extremism as a mechanism of policy, Pakistan Govt particularly the Pakistani Army and ISI, endangers not only the vision of strategic corporation, but also Pakistan’s chance to be an appreciated nation with lawful regional influence

World Bank assistance to clean Ganga, approved by CCEA

  • Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) accepted the Environment and Forests Ministry’s offer for World Bank’s support to National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) for hiatus of pollution of river Ganga
  • The total cost for the project for hiatus of pollution of Ganga river is estimated Rs 7,000 Crore
  • The Loan agreement with World Bank was signed in June 2011

Presence of raw uranium in Libya confirmed by UN agency

  • The UN atomic agency confirmed the existence of raw uranium in Libya
  • This was followed after US news channel reported that the new regime forces had found potentially radioactive material
  • There is raw uranium stored in drums at a site near Sabha in central Libya
  • The uranium, stored by the Government of Muammar al-Gaddafi, had been declared to the IAEA

     

Advocacy group on media constituted by NHRC

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has constituted an advocacy group
  • The group comprising 12 senior journalists
  • Objective: The group will give advice to the NHRC on how best to use media to endorse human rights in the country and to re-examine the existent system of the Commission with regard to Media and make suggestions for additional development
  • NHRC Chairperson Justice K G Balakrishnan to chair the Advisory Group on the Media and Human Rights

 

Sachin’s proposals on revamping ODI format rejected by ICC

  • International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat has ruled out changes to 50-over cricket despite a proposal put forward by Indian great Sachin Tendulkar
  • Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had proposed to the ICC to make “a radical switch” from 50-50 to four 25-over innings
  • As per Sachin, 4 alternate innings of 25 overs for each side in an international would be the fairest way of balancing the advantages gained by the team that won the toss, when the pitch and weather conditions mean that a match can virtually be decided by the spin of a coin
  • Tendulkar’s letter also proposed changes in voluntary Power plays

‘Zindagi Zindabad’ campaign launched by Haryana

  • Haryana Government launched ‘Zindagi Zindabad’ campaign
  • Objective: To make the individuals conscious about the services being provided by the Haryana State AIDS Control Society

  • Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi said that country’s enormous demographic fluctuations and detailed electoral process does not allow such a law as proposed by Team Anna

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) declared the match schedule and revealed event logo of the ICC World Twenty20 2012
  • The event to be held in Sri Lanka from September 18, 2012 to October 7, 2012
