INS Sharabh decommissioned

  • Indian Naval Ship Sharabh: A landing ship tanker
  • The oldest commissioned ship of the Indian Navy
  • INS ‘Sharabh’ decommissioned at the Naval Jetty at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • Commissioned in January 1976, at Gdynia, Poland
  • Ship had the merit of participating in many amphibious operations both on the eastern and western seaboard of the country and landed troops and materials on all major landing sites in the Andaman sea region

New CVC: Pradeep Kumar

  • Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar chosen as next CVC (Chief Vigilance Commissioner)
  • Mr. Pradeep Kumar, retires as Defence Secretary on July 31
  • He was chosen by consensus by a panel comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home
    Minister P Chidambaram and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj
  • But his selection has been not been officially confirmed yet
  • Mr. Kumar, a Haryana cadre IAS officer of the 1972 batch, was Secretary, Defence Production, prior to becoming the Defence Secretary

Lok Sabha Speaker Ms Kumar meets leaders of political parties for endorsing women’s reservation bill

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Ms Meira Kumar called for a meeting of the leaders of political parties who are yet to endorse the women’s reservation bill
  • The meeting attended by Lalu Yadav of Rashtriya Janata Dal, Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi party, Dara Singh Chauhan of Bahujan Samaj Party, Ajit Singh of Rashtriya Lok Dal, E.Ahmad of Muslim League and Independent leader Inder Singh Namdhari among others
  • The meeting carries importance in the background of the fact that Lok Sabha speaker is trying to gain consensus on the women’s reservation bill prior to the beginning of Parliament session next month

India and Bangladesh to resolve boundary issues via a Joint Census

  • India and Bangladesh to hold a joint census
  • Joint Census in the areas along the border as a part of the process of resolution to the undischarged land boundary issues
  • The 3 day census exercise involving officials from both India and Bangladesh is planned to begin from 15th July 2011 and is intended at calculating the number of people living in these areas

The council of ministers in Rajasthan approved the Mukhyamantri Gramin BPL Aavas Yojna with an objective to provide houses to 10 lac BPL families in the next 3 years

United Nations formally recommends South Sudan to join the United Nations

  • The United Nations has formally recommended South Sudan to join the United Nations, becoming its 193rd member
  • South Sudan’s admission is due to be completed with a vote by the UN General Assembly
