Bhasha Sangam Initiative

The Bhasha Sangam Initiative aims to teach basic sentences of every day usage to school children in 22 different Indian languages. The initiative was launched under “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”. It is implemented by the Ministry of Education.

About Bhasha Sangam Initiative

The basic idea of the initiative is that the people of India should acquire basic conversational skills in different Indian languages other than their own mother tongue. The initiative was launched during the celebrations of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated on October 31 to mark the birth anniversary of Shri Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

Benefits of the initiative

  • The initiative boosts the vision of National Education Policy 2020. The policy lays emphasis on promotion of Indian languages. The policy aims to promote language learning as a skill.
  • The initiative will help the students of the country to embrace linguistic diversity. It will aid them to sensitize the richness of Indian culture.

What is the plan?

Around hundred sentences in 22 different Indian languages are to be presented to the school children. All these twenty-two languages are those languages listed under the eighth schedule of Indian constitution. The sentences are to be presented in such a way that the children will be able to read in that particular language. They will be presented in audio and video forms along with sign language. With this, the school children will get acquainted with the pronunciation of different languages and their scripts. Around twenty-two booklets have been created to implement the initiative. These books are available on DIKSHA and E-Pathshala. The booklets were developed by NCERT.

Objective of the initiative

The Bhasha Sangam Initiative aims that at least 75 lakh people should acquire the skill (to learn every day usage sentences in 22 different languages) during the “Azadi ka amrit Mahotsav” period. This period was launched by Prime Minister Modi in March 2021. The period is 75 weeks before the 75th anniversary of Independence of India which falls on 2023. It will end on 15th August 2023.

Bhasha Sangam Application

During the launch of the initiative, the Bhasha Sangam mobile application was launched. The app was developed by a startup called Multibhashi. Also, a mobile app-based quiz was launched. The quiz has around 10,000 questions on different states of India.
