Bangladesh has the highest tourist inflow to India in last 3 years

Minister of state and Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question, provided the country-wise break-up of foreign tourist arrivals for 2016, 2017 and 2018 for the top 60 countries.

The total number of foreign tourist arrivals over the last three years has increased from 8.8 million in 2016 to 10.04 million in 2017 followed by 10.56 million in 2018.

Foreign exchange earnings have also increased over the last three years. Forex earnings through tourism also increased from $22.92 billion in 2016 to $27.31 billion in 2017 followed by $28.58 billion in 2018.

Top 3 country-wise Arrivals to India in 2016, 2017 and 2018?

1) Bangladesh: Topped the list with most arrivals, with nearly one in every five foreign tourists have been from Bangladesh in the last two years. Around 1.38 million foreign tourists arrived from Bangladesh in 2016. These numbers followed a significant increase of 2.15 million and 2.25 million in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

2) United States of America: Arrivals from the USA has been increasing continuously over the years. 1.27 million in 2016 to 1.37 million in 2017, making a significant increase of 2.25 million in 2018.

3)United Kingdom (U.K) at the 3rd place.

Other Important countries:

  • Arrivals from Pakistan have seen a decline in the last 3 years. Pakistan from 1.04 lakh in 2016 to 44,266 in 2017 followed by 41,659 in 2018.
  • Argentina ranked 60th, the lowest amongst the data provided for the 60 countries in terms of tourist arrivals.
